The Empire State Building will celebrate the holiday, Eid-al-Fitr, by shining its world-famous tower lights green on August 30, 2011. In Islam, the color green symbolizes a happy occasion and the importance of nature.

Eid-al-Fitr, or “the Festival of Fast-Breaking,” is a joyous celebration which commemorates the end of Ramadan and marks the completion of a month of spiritual renewal for the global Muslim community.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims around the world observe a strict fast from sunrise until sunset, participate in prayer and demonstrate acts of kindness.

The dhimmitude in this press release is nauseating – as if it eliminates the building as a potential target. As we noted in previous posts on the Empire State Building, from the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point:

The color green in Islamic tradition is always linked to the Prophet Muhammad, and is therefore synonymous with Islam itself. It is used ubiquitously throughout the Islamic world, as well as in jihadi imagery, to indicate the Prophet specifically and Islam in general.

While the act of “coloring” a state (or a flag, an individual, or a symbol) green, may seem simple and of little consequence, it should be remembered that the color green is deeply significant to all sectors of the Islamic world, and the act of “coloring” specific symbols green is an overtly political and explicitly Islamic statement.

According to Muslims, Ramadan is the Month of Jihad and the month of victory. So for whom is it a “happy occasion”? Just askin’.
