Giacinto Calderara (1729-1803)
The music talent of the Italian composer Giacinto Calderara was already apparent during his childhood. Young Calderara started forming his own musical thoughts from an early age and soon started coming up with the compositions which made a name for him far beyond the boundaries of his home town. Caldrerara was just twenty years old when he was given the respected and coveted post of music at the cathedral in Asti. Calderara's Ricimero was staged more than twenty times after its premiere performance and a modified version of his opera was staged in Asti, Casale and Monferrato, Turin and Ivrea in 2003 during festivities commemorating the two-hundred anniversary of the composer's death.
Mercoledì 12 marzo al teatro Municipale è stato rappresentato "Ricimero" (...) Ricimero aprì, il 27 dicembre 1755 la stagione al Teatro Regio di Torino e trionfò per ben 21 repliche. L'evento di mercoledì 12 marzo è stata l'occasione per ascoltare le belle voci dei cantanti lirici che indossavano sfarzosi costumi di Roberto De Valle tratti dal repertorio dei rinomati figurinisti Caramba ed Eugenio Guglielminetti; l'orchestra della Compagnia d'Opera Italiana magistralmente diretta da Maurizio Benedetti e il narratore Mario Brusa.

There's no way around it. Arianna Savall sounds exactly like a young Emma Kirkby, and if you like that straight-toned, sharply focused soprano quality, with just the bare hint of a vibrato at the very ends of phrases, then you'll find Savall very satisfying and you'll easily appreciate her superb interpretations of these rarely heard vocal works from 17th-century Italy. She begins with a magnificent cantata by Marco Marazzoli that sets the tone for the whole program--a "moral canzona" that focuses on the "literary theme of the rose"--and her vocal prowess is evident in her ability to lend enough dramatic force to the work to keep us interested for its entire 13 minutes. She lends a particularly warm and ingratiating quality to the beautifully wrought final minutes of the same composer's "moral cantata" O mortal, whose text refers to the fate of the Biblical Samson, and repeatedly urges, "Do you desire even greater glories? Then learn how to conquer yourself."
Instrumental pieces, ideally performed by the viols, harp, organ, and theorbo of the Ricercar Consort, alternate with the vocal works, and the combination makes for a very satisfying, easy-to-listen-to program. Savall's penetrating vocal style really does grow on you, even though there are times when her screechy leaps to higher registers can be bothersome. Overall, however, this singer shows great sensitivity to her material and draws us right in, so that we feel the words and melodies in complete sync with her interpretive vision. The viol and plucked-string playing is first rate, and the recorded sound brings us into intimate contact with this completely unfamiliar yet always engaging music.

Cornago's activity is attested during the middle decades of the 15th century, and the Mass is a unique example of the period. It is contemporaneous with Dufay's cantus firmus settings, and shares the distinction with the Missa Se la face ay pale of being the earliest known mass based on a secular tune (track #1). In general design, it is very similar to Franco-Flemish polyphony of the period and indeed it has been suggested that Cornago came from Belgium.
The songs include both lighter and more serious pieces, as well as several distinct settings of the famous bass-theme, La Spagna. Item #12 is a song by Cornago for which Ockeghem composed a fourth voice, apparently during his trip to Spain. Indeed, the Mass has some stylistic similarity to Ockeghem's output as well, though the tunes are certainly unique. The songs recorded here present some of the variety of Spain in this period.

Christine Schornsheim (Andreas Staier joins her for one four hands work) plays the earlier works on two harpsichords; one is a copy of a generic 18th century French instrument (3 discs) which sounds fine, but the second is a fantastic sounding original Kirckman of 1777 with a surprising array of different voices used here to great effect (2 discs). CD4 is played on a copy of a late 18th century clavichord and this is the gem of the collection, Haydn's music really suiting the capricious get gentle clavichord sound. Later works are played on a Viennese-type Dulcken fortepiano of 1793 (5 discs) and the final two discs (including Sonatas 61 and 62!) on a Broadwood grand pianoforte of 1804. Both pianos sound excellent and well maintained.
Disc 14 is a conversation about the recordings: it is all in German.

IMPORTANT!
In a few days I hope to begin posting some of my LPs rip.
This is a note to (maybe) prevent some questions.
I'm using WavePurity for ripping as well for some restoration. After a lot of thinking & testing I decided to apply just the clicks & pops remover to avoid losing too much of the original recording. All the rip will be made in the MP3 320 Kbps format and will be posted untouched.
Every post concerning LP rips will be clearly marked.
