Mom stabs daughter in head with machete: Cops

MONTREAL – A 38-year-old mother of four appeared in a Montreal courthouse Monday afternoon, charged with attacking her 19-year-old daughter with a machete.

Johra Kaleki faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and carrying a weapon for dangerous purpose. She is due to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at Montreal’s Philippe Pinel Institute to determine if she is fit to stand trial.

Police said Kaleki stabbed her eldest daughter, Behar Ebrahimi in the head Sunday night during an argument over Ebrahimi spending the night away from home.

She suffered severe injuries, but not life-threatening.

Four other family members were in the home at the time, police said, and witnessed the attack, including the woman’s husband and the three other daughters, aged 10, 14 and 16. The other children have since been put under the protection of child services.

Kaleki’s lawyer, Tom Pentefountas, told the media that his client momentarily “lost possession of her faculties” and is normally a “balanced person.”

The prosecutor for the case, Anna Gauvin, said Kaleki was “hysterical” when officers arrived on the scene and had to be calmed down.

Kaleki’s bail hearing is scheduled for July 12 after the completion of her evaluation.
