Lunatic, superstitious President of Islamic Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, has now proclaimed that American troops in Iraq are there to foil the re-appearance of the 12th Imam back on earth after some 1,300 years of this teenage boy, 12th descendant of Prophet Mohammad, disappearing down the Jamkaran well in Iran, never to be seen again but returning as the redeemer of End Times, where the whole world will become a Moslem caliphate and Jesus will also convert to Islam. As the accolyte of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi the religious leader of the 12th-er Hojatieh sect, the Turd is a believer of the need to destroy everything and everyone to get the End Timer's attention and thus persuade him to return and redeem the Moslem world. Only when the cries of the dying, tortured and oppressed reaches a sufficient crescendo for a sufficient length of time will it attract the attention of the 12th Imam. So opposing inflicted misery, pain and suffering according to the Hojatieh, is opposing Islam and Allah! And punishable by death! "Moharebeh ba Khoda" (waging war against god). Without any attempt to establish a moral equivalency, on a much gentler note, Christianity has its own End Times event, so it's a matter of a desire for final redemption and solution to our worldly tribulations that runs in the human psyche, regardless of the religious philosophy: "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 4:16&17) On the other hand, there will be a problem of dead muslims (or inhabitants of largely islamic lands) polluting the Holy Land, and needing to be buried in order to cleanse it: "And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give to Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog." (Ezekiel 39:11)

Pour certains courants du chiisme, et par exemple le dernier imam pour les Duodécimains, n'est pas mort, mais a été occulté, en ghayba (غَيْبة [ġayba], absence éloignement; disparition). Vivant dans un monde invisible, il est appelé l'imam caché, le Mahdi supposé revenir à la fin des temps. Cela correspond à une révélation faite à Fatima, fille de Mahomet : « elle sera à l'origine d'une lignée de sauveurs dont le dernier du même nom que son père et comblera la terre de justice et d'équité. »

L'idée d'occultation est apparue pour la première fois vers l'an 700 avec les kaysanites, groupe de chiites vivant à Kufa, pour qui Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiya, fils de `Alî et d'une de ses esclaves, serait le quatrième imam, il ne serait pas mort mais aurait été soustrait au monde et vivrait caché.

Le concept d'occultation devint la base de presque toutes les sectes chiites, chacune ayant son imam caché. Il y a deux degrés dans l'occultation : la petite occultation consiste à se cacher pour éviter les poursuites, et la grande occultation où l'imam n'a plus aucun contact avec les vivants bien qu'il soit considéré comme encore vivant. L'imâm caché peut s'exprimer à travers des représentants (les imams wakîl) qui sont les imâms parlants (nâtiq) appelés aussi ambassadeurs (safîr)

Selon Sohrawardi, le mahdi est présent incognito, mais il ne peut révéler sa présence, car il perdrait immédiatement sa puissance spirituelle.
