Radical Harlem Mosque’s Boy Scouts Look Outward – Recruiting for Islam?

A mosque in Harlem that mimicks the Muslim Brotherhood in name, purpose, and logo, is home to a Boy Scout troop.

An all-Muslim troop now planning to perform dawah recruit non-Muslims into its fold. Where will the transition to Islam and sharia begin? Taking shoes off before entering the mosque? Teaching about Allah? Eating halal snacks? A stealth radicalization process through the BSA? From the The Uptowner:

A Harlem Boy Scout troop that has been meeting at an Islamic mosque since 1978 is planning to reach outside its walls to bring in new recruits.

Convening weekly at the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, the ranks of Boy Scout Troop 357 are filled with children who have some tie to the religious center, either as members or as relatives of people associated with the mosque. The troop’s scoutmasters and committee leaders all grew up in the mosque. But the group’s makeup could soon change as leaders plan their first concerted outreach to bring in members of all faiths. “We believe we can benefit everybody and not just Muslims,” said Scoutmaster Salih Abdur-Rahman, a member of the unit when he was growing up.

Troop 357, meeting at the mosque on 113th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, has about 20 members, with some people coming from the Bronx, Brooklyn and New Jersey. The troop is trying to roughly double its ranks with efforts that will start in the next several weeks. This will include going door to door with flyers, speaking at local public schools and encouraging current members to bring friends, said Abdur-Rahman.

But is the Mosque of the Islamic Brotherhood (MIB) a place for any Boy Scout?

Consider their statement of purpose:

“Allah is our goal
The Prophet Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah is our leader
The Qu’ran is our constitution
Jihad is our way
And death in the way of Allah is our promised end.”

Consider their logo adorned with the sword of Islam.

And consider they place that emblem on the Scout uniform:

The distinctive unit patch of Pack and Troop 357 is known as the Liwa-ul-Iman (Banner of Faith). Utilizing traditional Islamic symbolism, it serves the purpose of reminding Muslim Scouts of the lofty principles of their faith. It is worn on the official uniform of the Boy Scouts of America, beneath the American flag, in order to remind those same scouts of their duty to serve the nation with distinctive dignity. The Muslim Scouts of Unit 357 are educated in these principles.

Among the principles the imam of MIB holds is being a member of the National Committee to Free Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin – the imprisoned cop killer and former black power radical known as H. Rap Brown – who is also the leader of the radical militant Detroit Muslim group, Ummah. Numerous members of the ‘Ummah’ were recently arrested and indicted on numerous charges.

When the Scouts defined their motto as “Be Prepared”, we doubt they meant

be prepared to wage jihad in the name of Allah.
