Looking at this video, he doesn’t look like somebody with murder in mind.
Devout Muslim, Major Nidal Malik Hasan was angry about being sent to war and a probe had been launched into messages he allegedly posted online expressing sympathy with suicide bombers.
The 39-year-old is said to have used two handguns during the rampage at Fort Hood in Texas – the world’s largest military installation.
The base commander at Fort Hood said soldiers who witnessed the shooting rampage reported that the gunman shouted “Allahu Akbar!”, which is Arabic for “God is great”, before opening fire.
Within minutes, 13 soldiers at the base were dead or dying in the worst mass shooting yet at a military base in the US.
Among the 30 people injured in the attack — described by President Barack Obama as an “horrific outburst of violence” — two were civilians.
Hasan was finally cornered and shot multiple times by a female security officer.
He survived and is in a stable condition in hospital.
The heroine was hit but has also survived and is recovering after surgery.
Base Commander Lt Gen Bob Cone said of the shooter: “I would say his death
is not imminent.”
Retired Col Terry Lee, who said he had worked with the shooter said Hasan had hoped Obama would pull troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq and often got into arguments with other soldiers who supported the wars.
Mr Lee said: “He was so outspoken I said to him once ‘look you got to cool it’.
“He was reacting with open glee at the death of some soldiers by a suicide bomber.
I told him ‘you might not agree with this is the army and we are here to serve the country’.”
Mr Lee said Hasan repeatedly said:
“Muslims should rise up against the aggressors.”
The psychiatrist, who was single and had no children, was due to be deployed to Afghanistan at the end of the year. In the hours before the killings he was seen on CCTV shopping at a convenience store at the base dressed in traditional Muslim robes and a prayer cap.
Defence sources said at least six months ago Virginian-born Hasan, whose family are thought to come from Jordan, came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats.
They included posts which compared suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.
Investigators were not certain whether Hasan had written the posts and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said the sources.
Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said: “I do know that he has been known to have told people that he was upset about going (to Afghanistan).”
