The security risk posed by large-scale Muslim immigration into Europe has been underlined once again with the arrest of an Islamist with links to Al-Qaeda working at the world’s largest atom accelerator.

The man, identified as an Algerian-origin person with a French passport, worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) at the Large Hadron Collider which is located in a huge tunnel under the Swiss–French border.

The scientist and his brother were arrested in the south eastern French city of Vienne. They are accused of involvement with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, a North African group that has been responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in Algeria aimed at foreigners.

The suspected Islamist has been working at CERN since 2003. Although the work at the installation has no practical military application, the issue of concern to investigators is that an Al-Qaeda sympathiser was able to gain clearance to enter the complex in the first place.

Investigators suspect the brothers of having made contacts through the Internet with Al-Qaeda members of the Maghreb.

French police have seized two laptops, three hard drives and several memory sticks from the suspects’ houses and recorded cyber-exchanges between the brothers and Al-Qaeda members.

The arrests come in the same week that security experts worldwide described as “inevitable” the advent of full body X-ray scanning for all international airline travellers.

That potentially health-hazardous development is the result of the first appearance of an internal suicide bomb used in August by an Al-Qaeda terrorist in Saudi Arabia.

According to Australian newspapers, travellers could be forced to hand in mobile phones and undergo full body X-rays when travelling to Europe. Trials of similar body scanners have already taken place at Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide airports.

French anti-terror chiefs have also suggested that the measures be implemented at all French airports.

According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, a senior Interior Ministry official pointed out that it was “unthinkable when you think about the frequency with which some people fly. The health risks would be too high.”

Full X-ray scans, which are used by customs officers for examining suspected drug smugglers, would cause huge disruptions for air travellers.
