NSS dismiss Mayor’s call for non-Muslims to fast for a day in Ramadan

LE MAIRE DE LONDRES APPELLE LES LONDONIENS A JEUNER
POUR LE RAMADAN !

The National Secular Society today dismissed Boris Johnson’s call for non-Muslims to fast for a day in Ramadan as a transparent attempt to flatter Muslim voters.

The Mayor of London, speaking at a mosque and community centre, urged non-Muslims to fast for a day during Ramadan and then to break their fast at a mosque to improve their understanding of Islam.

Terry Sanderson, President of the NSS, said: “This message obviously seeks to flatter Muslim voters, but that does not make it any less of a silly overstatement.
We can all get on together – Christians, Hindus, Muslims and atheists,” he said. “But the moment religion becomes a political tool, it takes on sinister overtones.”

Stephen Evans of the National Secular Society commented: “statements such as these actually run the risk of widening social divisions in our communities.

Most of us know very well what Ramadan is, I see no need for non-Muslims to join in with Islamic festivals and rituals.

Many British people are indifferent to religion and pay little attention to other religious festivals such as Diwali or Lent, so why should we all join in with Ramadan?
