Muslims now account for 12 percent of Britain’s prison population, and are being increasingly radicalised in those facilities by the hundreds of Islamist extremists imprisoned alongside them, new figures have shown.
According to the Ministry of Justice’s prison population and accommodation briefing for 4th September 2009, there were exactly 84,130 prisoners in British jails.
Of this number, at least 10,000 are Muslim, according to Ed Husain, co-director and co-founder of Quilliam, a government funded front organisation set up to whitewash Islamist activities in Britain.
The figures emerged after it was revealed that at least 40 hard-core convicted Islamist terrorists have been freed from prison, many of them early after qualifying for parole, and 50 more are set to be released within the very near future. Those due for release back into British society include those such as Sohail Qureshi (pictured).
Those who have been released already include militants convicted of plots to kill British soldiers, set off bombs, attack civilian targets, aiding and assisting bombers and serving in Islamist terror networks in Pakistan. Many are having their sentences cut, possibly as a result of overcrowding in the jails.
For example, al-Qaeda trained Qureshi, who was given a four-and-a-half year jail term after being arrested in October 2006 with night-vision goggles and £9,000 in cash, is due to be released early.
Also among those scheduled for freedom is Andrew Rowe (pictured), described by police as a “global terrorist”, whose 15 year jail sentence imposed in 2005 was later reduced to ten years by the Appeal Court. With time served on remand, it means he will be released in eight months under the automatic two-thirds rule for prisoners serving more than four years. He was identified as one of the “200 most dangerous men in Britain”, having fought for Islamist forces in Afghanistan and Bosnia. He was arrested for smuggling bomb instructions into Britain.
According to reports, all of London’s ten probation hostels now house at least one terrorist-related convict out on parole. Once released, these Islamists are essentially free to do as they please, as all attempts to keep them under control were squashed after the Law Lords ruled that further restrictions were incompatible with their “human rights” under the Human Rights Act. This Orwellian law was introduced after Britain was ordered to bring it into line with European Union laws.
Earlier, the director of Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Professor Michael Clarke, warned that the police and MI5 must “brace themselves to counter a new generation of violent Islamic terrorists. Home-grown jihadists intent on murdering others in high-profile outrages will not wither away,” he said.
Professor Clarke added that the arrests of hundreds of Muslim terrorists in Britain had “turned prisons into universities of terror.”
