About the Only Religious War in Latin America, the Cristiada (1926-1929) of Mexico, all the Fault of a Fanatical Atheist
A new movie has come out about the only religious war in Latin America called “For Greater Glory”.It happened in Mexico from 1926-1929.
It has actors Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria(of “Desperate Housewives”), and Ruben Blades of Panama, one of the 2 greatest salsa singers of all time(with Willie Colon).
An undeniable case of an Atheist who killed and persecuted others in the name of Atheism
There is the claim that no atheist has ever persecuted or killed others,non-atheists, specifically because of atheism.
That is not true as the history of Communism shows, but many atheist intellectuals still deny it.
However they can’t say the same about Mexican president Plutarco Calles(1877-1945).He was a militant atheist who wanted all religion in Mexico to disappear.
War breaks out
1.The Cristero War (1926-29) also known as the La Cristiada, was an uprising by Catholics against the Mexican government which cost 90,000 deaths on both sides. The Mexican revolution began in 1910 against dictator Porfirio Diaz.
2.The new Mexican revolution of 1917 had many laws against the Catholic Church and many were so extreme as to go against the basic freedom of religion. They were not enforced till 1926.
A Non-Christian is the Leader of the Cristeros
Ultimately it was led by Mexican general Enrique Gorostieta(1889-1929),who did not believe in Christianity but was for freedom of religion. He died during the struggle.
The slogan of the group was “Viva Cristo Rey/Long live Christ the King”.And thousands of women helped them by getting arms, food and information. For 3 years all the Catholic churches closed in protest and there was no mass. The rebellion ended with the help of the US ambassador.
The most famous martyr of the war
It was a priest called Miguel Pro(1891-1927) who was
falsely accused of trying to kill an ex-president. Miguel Pro was
arrested and shot by a firing squad in 1927. Before the order to fire
was given, he spread his arms in the form of a cross.
