 We have made huge inroads in our fight against the seal slaughter and have helped sway public opinion in a major way in Canada and internationally, but we haven't won YET. In just a few short weeks, a new generation of vulnerable young seals in Canada — most of whom are three months of age or younger — will be shot or bludgeoned to death and then skinned.
This commercial slaughter of marine mammals is the largest in the world, and it takes place for one reason only: to satisfy the greed of the fur industry. And there's no excuse for it. We MUST keep the pressure on until we wipe out this cruelty completely.
PETA's work has helped add to the international outcry against Canada's government-approved mass killing of baby seals. But one of the most important voices that needs to be heard is yours. As you can imagine, the scene that plays out on Canada's ice floes is heart-wrenching. With no way to defend themselves against the sealers' spiked clubs, the pups yelp in terror as the blows crush their skulls; other seals can only look on in terror, watching and wailing. Some pups cower next to where their siblings had been slaughtered right before their eyes. Others crawl through pools of blood, cuddling up next to the bodies of the victims. Sealers often hook the pups in the eye, cheek, or mouth to avoid damaging their fur. They then drag the seals across the ice and — in many cases, while the animals are still conscious — rip the skin off their small bodies, which then are discarded like garbage.

But even though seal fur has been shut out of the European and American markets and polls consistently show that the majority of Canadians want the seal slaughter stopped, the government continues to sanction this horrific spectacle. Officials have even begun trying to foist seal products on China, a nation with one of the worst reputations in the world for abusing and exploiting animals.
Someday soon, the Canadian government will look back on the seal slaughter with shame. But until that day comes, it is up to caring people like you and me to come to the defense of these vulnerable animals.
