It is a mystical approach to Allah and Islam, and it is practiced by both Sunnis and Shias. There is however an idealization of Sufism in the West.

Why Sufism does not deserve the Idealization it has

1.It is NOT a pacific approach,Sufis are mystical but they are no pacifists, they accept the idea of killing and getting killed for Allah, which is after all,in the Koran:
Example 1:
Chapitre 3:168-170:
“Who said of their brothers, ‘Had they obeyed us, they would not have been slain.’ Say: ‘Then avert death from yourselves, if you speak truly.’ Count not those who were slain in God’s way as dead, but rather living with their Lord, by Him provided, rejoicing in the bounty that God has given them, and joyful in those who remain behind and have not joined them, because no fear shall be on them, neither shall they sorrow.”
Example 2:
Chapter 9:111:
“God has bought from the believers their selves and their possessions against the gift of Paradise; they fight in the way of God; they kill, and are killed; that is a promise binding upon God in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Koran; and who fulfils his covenant truer than God? So rejoice in the bargain you have made with Him; that is the mighty triumph.”
So,of course the Sufis are NOT the same thing as the Mennonites and the Buddhist monks.
2.Another idea is that the Sufis are monk-like,not at all, they can marry, they are not celibate.
3.In addition,Sufis approve of Sharia-Islamic law, they not against it,in all the more than one thousand years it has existed they have never been against it.That law is anti-human rights:death for apostates, for homosexuals, for adulterers, for blasphemers, etc.I would say the only Sufis who were not like them was,to a certain extent, the famous Rumi and Dara Shikoh.

“Demystifying the Sufis”
“Kashmir:Propagation of Islam and the Terror of the Sufis” by M.A.Khan
He is an ex-Muslim from Pakistan who has written the extraordinary book “Islamic Jihad:a Legacy of Forced Conversion,Imperialism and Slavery”(2009),where on p. 115–133 he tells all about the horrible acts of the Sufi “saints”. The book has a bibliography for verfication of content.

The Most Famous Sufis
They were:
1.Al-Ghazzālī (1058–1111)
He was a Persian and Sunni Muslim theologian, philosopher, and mystic.Undeniably the greatest thinker among the Sufis he wrote “The Incoherence of the Philosophers”(Tahāfut al-Falāsifa) where he critiques the philosophers of the Muslim world. It is his masterpiece. He had a very intolerant position.
He also wrote an Autobiography and “The Alchemy of Happiness”, a Sufi book.
2.Amir Khusrau/Khosrow(1253-1325 )
He was a poet born in India, the son of a Turkic father from Central Asia and an Indian mother and he wrote mostly in Persian. He is very famous in India and is even credited with having invented the sitar,a kind of lute.
3.Rumi (1207-1273)
He was a Persian poet born in Tajikistan and who lived in Turkey. Many say he is the greatest mystical poet of Islam.
1.His masterpiece is a collection of poems called the Masnavi. It has 27,000 verses. His other famous collection is the Dīwān-e Kabīr (Great Work) or Diwan-e Shams-e Tabrizi (The Works of Shams of Tabriz)named in honor of Rumi’s master Shams. It has 35.000 couplets and 2.000 quatrains.
2.Following his death, his followers and his son Sultan Walad founded the Mevlevi Order, also known as the Order of the Whirling Dervishes, famous for its Sufi dance known as the Sama ceremony.
3.His doctrine advocates tolerance, goodness, charity and awareness through love. It is a mistake to think, however, that he was a relativist, that “all religion are the same”.
The Koran and Rumi
He wrote in one of his poems, according to Franklin Lewis in “Rumi: Past and Present, East and West – The Life, Teachings, and Poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi”(2000)
“Flee to God’s Koan, take refuge in it
there with the spirits of the prophets merge.
The Book conveys the prophets’ circumstances
those fish of the pure sea of Majesty.”
Seyyed Hossein Nasr, the Muslim scholar,in “Rumi and the Sufi Tradition,” which is in “The Scholar and the Saint”by Chelkowski(editor), p. 183 says:
“One of the greatest living authorities on Rûmî in Persia today, Hâdî Hâ’irî, has shown in an unpublished work that some 6,000 verses of the Dîwân and the Mathnawî are practically direct translations of Qur’ânic verses into Persian poetry.”
Seyyed Hossein Nasr (born in 1933) is an Iranian University Professor of Islamic studies at George Washington University who has written dozens of books on Islam.
And so what?
The Koran is shorter than the NT,the NT has 8,000 verses and the Koran has 6,000 so almost all the Koran was copied by Rumi and added to his poems.
Rumi states in his Dīwān,according to Ibrahim Gamard,in ” Rumi and Islam: Selections from His Stories, Poems, and Discourses — Annotated and Explained”, p. 171 that:
“The Sufi is hanging on to Muhammad, like Abu Bakr.”
The Whirling Dervishes
In 1925 they and the other Sufi orders were abolished by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, who was an apostate of Islam, but in the 1950s, the Turkish government began allowing the Whirling Dervishes to perform once a year in Konya,Turkey.Read about Ataturk’s apostasy here:
“Evidence Ataturk,Creator of Modern Turkey,Greatest Man produced by the Turkic Peoples, was an Apostate of Islam”
Dara Shikoh
He was a Sufi, the heir-apparent to the Mughal throne of India, eho tried to reconcile Islam and Hinduism and was killed as an apostate.Read:
“Dara Shikoh,Moghul Prince of India and Sufi, was Executed in 1659 by his brother Emperor Aurangzeb,as an Apostate of Islam”
